Vienna Club Commision – Visions of Black Club Culture – Past, Present, and Future

🪩 How has Black club culture shaped the sound, movement, and politics of the dancefloor? How is it connected to working-class Black culture? And what does it mean to claim club culture as a space of liberation today?

🌃 This even revisits the foundations of club culture through a Black lens — tracing its origins in resistance, creativity, and community.

🌃 In connection with the release of oltreoceano’s third volume of This Is America, this event brings together Vienna-based Black artists and cultural workers active in the club scene. Together, they explore how Black communities have shaped the dancefloor — from the roots of electronic music to Afrofuturist visions — alongside contributions from other marginalised communities. They also examine how these influences continue to resonate amidst gentrification and commercialisation.

oltreoceano is an independent magazine dedicated to understanding, promoting, and highlighting the culture of the African American community for a European audience.

This project was founded in Italy in 2022 with the aim of exploring the diverse impact this multifaceted culture has had, continues to have, and will have on the Western world – especially on those living in Europe.

Each year, This Is America brings together and amplifies the monographic research developed by oltreoceano’s editorial team and collaborators, enriched with exclusive content, unpublished texts, and visual artworks. The result is a cultural product unique in the European landscape, one that intertwines journalistic and historical research, artistic production, and grassroots participation.
