A creature\, so deranged\, strange\, and twisted\, its presence remains in constant flux. A tentacled elder-god\, a multi-breasted space-vixen\, a many-faced\, utterly fiendish beast. SNES is not one\, but many. Not one thought that echoes through the void\, but a chorus. A frightful symphony of ideas. Fundamentally questioning the idea of artistic production processes\, SNES establishes a postmodern continuum\, wherein the fractured self is being mirrored in equally distorted selves. The artistic practices of SNES’ involve working with interactive digital media\, installation\, performance and usage of artificial intelligence for artistic purposes. \nExpanded Painting with Artificial Intelligence\n \nMore than three years ago\, I initiated an experiment\, whether or not it’s possible to simulate the painterly process with artificial intelligence. Eventually\, after growing the AI model to a volume of roughly 250K artworks from classical and contemporary modernity\, it started to replicate composition\, ductus\, and light & color theory – the basics of painting I learned during my studies at university. Ever since I started to work with AI I was interested in the complicated relationship between the seemingly “smart” machine and us humans as its user. Which interaction possibilities and interfaces open up? Which senses and cognition tools do people have to understand a ‘black box’\, like the products of an AI? And is there a form of machine vision – aesthetic artifacts – which on the one hand are created by the correspondence between two machines and on the other hand may not be recognized as such by people who do not have the corresponding sensors. \nErweiterte Malerei mit Künstlicher Intelligenz \nVor über drei Jahren habe ich das Experiment gestartet\, ob es möglich ist\, den malerischen Prozess mit einer künstlichen Intelligenz zu simulieren. Nachdem das KI-Modell schließlich auf einen Umfang von etwa 250K Kunstwerken aus der klassischen und zeitgenössischen Moderne angewachsen war\, begann es\, Komposition\, Duktus sowie Licht- und Farbtheorie zu replizieren – die Grundlagen der Malerei\, die ich während meines Malerei-Studiums an der Universität gelernt habe. Seit ich begonnen habe\, mit KI zu arbeiten\, interessierte mich das komplizierte Verhältnis zwischen der scheinbar “intelligenten” Maschine und uns Menschen als deren Nutzer. Welche Interaktionsmöglichkeiten und Schnittstellen eröffnen sich? Welche Sinnes- und Erkenntniswerkzeuge hat der Mensch\, um eine “Black Box”\, wie die Produkte einer KI\, zu verstehen? Und gibt es eine Form des maschinellen Sehens – ästhetische Artefakte – die einerseits durch die Korrespondenz zwischen zwei Maschinen entstehen und andererseits von Menschen\, die nicht über die entsprechenden Sensoren verfügen\, möglicherweise nicht als solche erkannt werden.
