SUMMARY:Teach-In: Navigating the System – A Disability Justice Workshop
DESCRIPTION:Join us for an interactive disability justice workshop with Deloria Patton exploring how disabled people navigate systems\, services\, and support structures in Austria. \n\n\n\nDisability justice asks an important question: What would society look like if accessibility\, care\, and inclusion were built into our communities from the beginning? \n\n\n\nThis workshop combines political education with practical information. Participants will explore how ableist systems create barriers while also learning about the resources\, rights\, and support services that currently exist. \n\n\n\nWhether you are disabled\, chronically ill\, neurodivergent\, a caregiver\, a support worker\, an ally\, or simply interested in creating more accessible communities\, you are warmly welcome. \n\n\n\nWhat Is Disability Justice?\n\n\n\nDisability justice goes beyond legal accessibility requirements. It recognizes that many barriers are created by systems\, institutions\, policies\, and environments rather than by people’s bodies or minds. \n\n\n\nTogether\, we will discuss: \n\n\n\n\nWhat disability justice means in practice\n\n\n\nHow ableism shapes everyday experiences\n\n\n\nWhy accessibility benefits everyone\n\n\n\nThe relationship between disability rights and social justice\n\n\n\nCommunity care\, interdependence\, and collective support\n\n\n\nCreating more inclusive spaces and communities\n\n\n\n\nNavigating the Austrian Support System\n\n\n\nMany people are entitled to support but never receive it because the process of accessing services can be confusing\, overwhelming\, and difficult to navigate. \n\n\n\nThis workshop will provide practical information about: \n\n\n\n\nBehindertenpass (Disability Pass)\n\n\n\nPflegegeld (Care Allowance)\n\n\n\nAccessible and supported housing options\n\n\n\nSocial work and counselling services\n\n\n\nEurokey access systems\n\n\n\nHeimhilfe and personal support services\n\n\n\nCommunity resources and support networks\n\n\n\nWhere to start when seeking assistance\n\n\n\n\nParticipants will gain a clearer understanding of available services and how to access them. \n\n\n\nWho Should Attend?\n\n\n\nThis workshop is open to: \n\n\n\n\nDisabled people\n\n\n\nChronically ill people\n\n\n\nNeurodivergent people\n\n\n\nDeaf and hard-of-hearing people\n\n\n\nBlind and low-vision people\n\n\n\nCaregivers and personal assistants\n\n\n\nSocial workers and community organisers\n\n\n\nFamily members and friends\n\n\n\nAnyone interested in disability justice and accessibility\n\n\n\n\nNo previous knowledge is required. \n\n\n\nAbout the Facilitator\n\n\n\nDeloria Patton\n\n\n\nDeloria Patton is a disability justice advocate and educator dedicated to making information more accessible and helping people navigate systems that often create unnecessary barriers. \n\n\n\nThrough community education\, advocacy\, and practical support\, Deloria works toward greater accessibility\, inclusion\, and social justice. \n\n\n\nWhy This Workshop Matters\n\n\n\nDisability justice starts with understanding that disabled people are often excluded not because of their bodies or minds\, but because systems are designed without accessibility in mind. \n\n\n\nMany forms of support already exist in Austria. However\, accessing them can feel like a full-time job. This workshop aims to make information clearer\, more accessible\, and more actionable. \n\n\n\nBy understanding both the barriers and the available resources\, participants can better advocate for themselves\, support others\, and contribute to more accessible communities. \n\n\n\nAccessibility Information\n\n\n\nThis event takes place at Villa Vida Café\, Linke Wienzeile 102\, 1060 Vienna. \n\n\n\nAccessibility features include: \n\n\n\n\nStep-free entrance\n\n\n\nWheelchair-accessible ground floor venue\n\n\n\nAccessible toilet\n\n\n\nSeating available throughout the event\n\n\n\nService animals welcome\n\n\n\nFree drinking water available\n\n\n\nStaff and volunteers available to assist when needed\n\n\n\n\nIf you have additional accessibility requirements\, please contact us before the event.
